“The Three Faces of Eve”: Hollywood’s Take on Mental Illness

July 7, 2023July 5, 2023 by Karen Harris

When it was released in 1957, The Three Faces of Eve was an instant hit. The film, based on the true story of a woman suffering from multiple personality disorder, was a groundbreaking take on mental wellness and its effects on individuals and their families. The Three Faces of Eve, starring Joanne Woodward, was an award-winning film that is historically significant because of its handling of mental illness.

The Three Faces of Eve was the first feature film to be based on a real-life case of multiple personality disorder (MPD). The movie was based on the true story of Chris Costner Sizemore, who was diagnosed with MPD in the 1950s. At the time, the condition was relatively unknown, and Sizemore’s story was a revelation to the public.

The movie was also groundbreaking in its portrayal of mental health issues. It presented a sympathetic view of those suffering from mental illness and was one of the first films to address the subject in a positive light. This was a major step forward in destigmatizing mental illness, and the movie was praised by mental health professionals for its accurate and empathetic portrayal of the condition.

When the movie begins, Eve White is a timid housewife living in Georgia. After experiencing severe headaches and blackouts, she is diagnosed with multiple personality disorder by Dr. Luther (Lee J. Cobb). As White’s treatment progresses, Dr. Luther discovers two more personalities, the rebellious Eve Black, and the wise Jane. Joanne Woodward’s performance as Eve White, Eve Black, and Jane is remarkable. She was able to subtly shift between the characters, allowing the audience to experience the pain and confusion of having multiple personalities. Woodward’s portrayal of Eve White is particularly impressive, as she conveys the character’s fear and anxiety with subtle facial expressions and body language.

The Three Faces of Eve‘s appeal was not limited to the medical and psychiatric communities. The movie was a commercial success, receiving five Academy Award nominations and winning Best Actress for star Joanne Woodward. The movie’s success sparked a wave of interest in multiple personality disorder, and it has been cited and referenced in countless books, films, and television shows. It was a defining moment in cinematic history during the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The movie’s influence can still be seen today in popular culture. Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris features a character based on Chris Costner Sizemore, and the movie Split was heavily influenced by the themes of The Three Faces of Eve. In fact, Joanne Woodward was cast in the role of Dr. Cornelia Wilbur, in the 1976 film, Sybil, another classic movie featuring multiple personality disorders. In Sybil, Woodward plays the doctor who diagnoses her patient, Sybil, played by Sally Field, with the rare mental disorder.

The Three Faces of Eve is an important movie in the history of cinema. Its groundbreaking portrayal of mental illness and its influence on pop culture have made it a classic of the film world. The subject matter, Joanne Woodward’s incredible performance, and its role in destigmatizing mental health issues all combine to make The Three Faces of Eve one of the most significant films of Hollywood’s Golden Era.
